What we do!
Each piece of porcelain is hand thrown, along with a matching pedestal. The pedestal is glued to the base to prevent the viscous molten glaze from destroying the kiln shelf. After the piece is fired, the pedestal is removed with a chisel and the resulting pot is hand ground to remove glass shards.
As a result of all the additional steps and processes, up to 30% of all the pieces are rejected. The firing schedule could be unsuccessful, there could be zero crystal growth, and pedestals may collapse or not be successfully removed from the piece resulting in a broken vase.
